Mr Hannifan

Gentlemen, the first thing I want you to contribute to the blog are your thoughts on the Coastal Management Pitch. What did you think about it? What did you learn from it? What do you think you did well and what could have been improved?

I thought you did very well with the task and I was impressed by the reflection on the advantages and disadvantages of your ideas. We have now finished with coasts. I hope you found the activity useful in applying the theory to real life.

Let's see what you think...

  1. Trying to work out how to find a solution to coastal flooding was quite hard because beaches located near tourist attraction could not have any sort of management where it would restrict space;Rip Rap would limit the space on the beach and there fore less people would be attracted because there is no beach to be on so another management like Groins would take it's place. The activity was also quite challenging because we needed to work out the cost of management and also the care it would need over time. this made it tricky because we had to find out if it was worth spending the money because would the income of doing nothing and letting nature do its work cost less then taking action but over all i think it was a good activity.

  2. I thought that the task was useful as it allowed us to analyse other groups ideas. I now know advantages/disadvantages and how/why the suggested methods are effective such as; sea walls, groynes, rip raps etc. It might have been more beneficial if we focused more on soft/hard engineering methods i.e how do they work?

  3. I thought the task was helpful in studying the various coastal management methods. It showed us what methods would help the most with different scenarios, for example, beach replenishment would be useful for tourism, rip rap would be useful for strong protection for land. It also showed us that money was a key aspect for choosing the right method. I think that setting jobs to members of the group was good in ensuring everyone had something to do and that all aspects were looked into. I think that the task could have been improved if plans of management were on a large piece of paper.

  4. I thought the task was an enjoyable change from regular text book work. It made us think about what we needed to do in order to prevent coastal erosion occurring, but also having to process the costs, and work out the advantages and disadvantages. It helped me to grasp the concept of how much money governments and areas are having to pay out in order to protect their coasts. Setting jobs also ensured everyone was doing something and no one was messing around. I think it may have been better if we had had time to prepare a PowerPoint or poster. Generally, the task went well, and I look forward to doing more lessons like this.

  6. I thought that the change from learning off the board and textbooks to the pitch was a great alternative. It gave us each something to think about such as costs and what kind of coastal defences would work, keeping in mind the money aspect of it all. It made us think about what kind of danger the coast is in and that the government wouldn't just settle for a design, just because its cheaper. I learnt how to find the balance between money and effectiveness, and this made the task really enjoyable. Next time if we do something like this, preparing a PowerPoint or another type of visual presentation would make the lesson a lot more enjoyable, whilst giving out valuable information to other pupils in the class.

  7. I think the task was good because we got to see other people's ideas as well as our own. Also we got to put our ideas together with other peoples in our groups which meant we all helped each other and if we got stuck others could help us. I think if we did something like this again it would be good if we could make a powerpoint or poster.

  8. I felt that the task was a important change of scenery and help to mix things up in class. It also helped us appreciate the others ideas and helped us to look at coastal erosion from another perspective which is the economical one which is very important and tells us about the human and manpower aspect of it and not only the geographical aspect of it which i felt was important
I look forward for more of these classes!

  9. I thought that this task was a really enjoyable experience and great oppurtunity to get your head out of a textbook. I found it really helpful applying your knowledge to a real life case study and liked the challenge of presenting in a pitch (where cost is an important factor). I preferred doing a pitch rather than a power point or poster as this was more fun and interactive. As you could work in groups you could recap things you may have missed about the topic and this was extremely helpful... Love to do something like this again!

  10. In my opinion this task was a helpful tool for getting used to the different types of coastal management. I liked the idea of how we had I budget to go by as it added a challenge to trying to get the right defenses without overdoing it. I liked seeing how all of the different groups had completely different solutions to the problem and we all came out with different sums of money left. I like these types of tasks even though I'm not a great speaker myself and I hope to see more of them in future topics.

  11. I enjoyed doing the Coastal Management Pitch; it made a change from doing normal text book work and we were able to work in groups. Doing this activity taught me what governments/councils have to think about when they are managing the coast lines, i.e. cost, tourism, landscape etc. Personally, I enjoyed the activity, and I think that writing a pitch was a good idea and a powerpoint or poster wasn't needed. If we could do more activities like this, it would be really good because everyone seemed to be getting on with the work, and it didn't require us finishing off posters and powerpoints at home for homework.

  12. i found the coastal management pitch good and enjoyably. This is because you have to think of this in a real life situation and the prices come to you as a shock at first but in the long run you save allot more money. It also helps you understand the process that the council go through. The lesson went well and it it was a calm end to the week.

  13. I found the task useful in that we learned more about the coastal topic from the council’s perspective. Trying to balance the budget for the defences, but still protect the bay added to the challenge. I appreciated Sir taking an interest in everyone’s presentation and weighing them up to choose the best one. I liked the set jobs that peoples were assigned; however, I personally think that the groups were a little too large. Some people had less input into the presentation because of the group size. But overall I think it was a beneficial few lessons.

  14. I thought that the task was good because it was completely different to everything else we've done this year and it was nice to do something different. We learnt about different types of coastal management and the effects and consequences they have Socially, economically and environmentally. I think we all had a good pitch, we all knew what we were doing and everyone was involved. Next time i think it would be better if we had more time to prepare but overall it was a good lesson

  15. i found this task useful on learning about coastal management. working in groups helped me develop my learning further because i could ask more questions on certain things. the task was fun and group work is a good way to learn. i also thought that if the groups were smaller, more people would have benefited from it because there was only 3 or 4 people doing the work in most groups.

  16. I thought the coastal management task was useful and fun. It showed us what factors are considered within sea defenses for example what type of defense you would use in a tourist attraction. It also showed us that money has a large impact on the decision people made. By working in groups we could tell each other our personal opinions and what we think would be best we also could learn things from each other. Overall it was a good task, much better than just using text books.

  17. The task on coastal management was enjoyable as we were able to work in chosen groups. Writting out the pitch and choosing what to do with our funds was a good way for us to learn how coastal councils actually work when it comes to coastal defence and gives us a wider knowledge on how much the coast is really impacted on.

  18. The coastal management task was a good idea because you gave us the information about the uses of hard and soft engineering in the class and sent us away in groups to decide how to protect a piece of coast. This will allow us to comment on other coastal management schemes should this come up in an exam, and also provide alternatives for the ideas.

  19. I thought the coastal management task was good because it gave us a chance to work in groups and made a change from doing textbook stuff like our normal lessons. I personally like how we had to pitch our ideas and compete with the other groups to have the best defence. Also I liked how we all had individual jobs to do. I think if did something like this again it would be good because everyone seemed to enjoy it and got on with the work.

  20. group work was decent compared to our normal textbook work was also fun to pitch and here others pitch about real life vcase studys. i feel its alot easy to learn from someonme pitching to you or sharing info than answering questions from a text book.

  21. I found the group work better then our usual classwork, as we can express our views with eachother and in the end find a solution allowing us to perform our selected pitch. It is also easier to learn in groups and take in more knowledge and opinions from others.

  22. I found the group work we did very useful as we could help each other if we didnt understand the work. Also it gave us a chance to get feedback and advice from others in the class when we presented the work, it was much more interesting than working off the board or from a text book, i intereacted more with the lesson.

  23. finding examples of coastal management was very easy as it is going on around the world as we speak however remembering these and using them in a answar as i find this a little difficult but i am sure this will come with expeirience. i enjoyed the group work becuase you get to learn and techech with others and are able to discuss the issues :-) 8) >->o <---- stickman
